In 2018, FMI Corporation, the leading management consultancy in construction, surveyed nearly 600 industry leaders and found that U.S. construction loses about $177 billion a year to labor spent on avoidable problems. Rework traced specifically to poor project information and miscommunication accounts for 48% of all rework, which comes to more than $31 billion annually.
That second figure is the one worth sitting with, because it means nearly half of everything rebuilt on American jobsites gets rebuilt for the simple reason that the information was wrong or missing when the work went out. Documentation is the only thing standing between a project and that outcome, which is why we treat it as the product rather than as overhead.
